Mr. Tomy Mathew, a 24-year-old young man had the inspiration to serve the downtrodden, hence he brought a mentally challenged person to his house and started looking after him. This happened during the year 1994. In 1995 he adopted one more person, and the process continued till the number of persons reached four. It was not possible to accommodate any more persons at home. At this time he put up the idea of constructing a shelter for them in his family property. With the support of his family members, he started Divyarakshalayam on the 15th of June 1996.
It was a humble start in his small ancestral house. He adopted many people who needed shelter and food there. The number of patients increased in the year 1996, and Tomy Mathew realized a trust was needed. As a result, Divyarakshalayam Social and Charitable Trust was established, and later re-registered under the Indian Charitable Societies Act 1959 as Divyarakshalayam Social and Charitable Society. Divyarakshalayam has served 2,309 mentally ill people since 1996, and 399 have died in its care.
There are currently 300 people in this institution ranging in age from 18 to 95. The orphanage control board has granted us a license for 300 residents, as well as psychosocial rehabilitation. Divyarakshalayam is run by an elected Management Committee. This Committee manages the entire functions through the leadership of the president, secretary, and treasurer.
The Divyarakshalayam Transition Center is dedicated to helping deserted and destitute individuals overcome adverse circumstances.
